River
Trader Knives
The knives below are Reproduction Trade Knives ,
and are a historical re-creation of the Early American Trade Knife. The
early knives were made and used between 1640 and 1890. The heat treating is
done as it was done for hundreds of years in a coal forge. The steel used is
1095 hi-carbon steel to keep the appearance of the Colonial/Trade Knife, but
still have the quality of today's standards. The knives carry a lifetime
warranty by the manufacturer River Traders.
These knives were traded to the Indians, as well as the white settlers and
trappers. Lewis and Clark are a good example, they carried them as presents
for the Indians to persuade them to trade only with the Americans.
A lot of the knives were imported to North America from Europe and traded to
such companies as the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Company.
Most of their knives were sent without handles to save room in shipping,
therefore it was common to see the knives with different types of handles.
The River Trader Knives, with the Curly Maple handles, represent a higher
end of of the handle material that was used.
The steel is 1095 high carbon Rockwell is 56. The small notch in the blade
in some of the knives is called the Meditterean notch and was used to strip
the fat off of the sinew for thread. |
